Is the AI Removal Tool in Lightroom Classic a Game-Changer for Photo Editing?

June 26th, 2024

THE NEWEST AI FEATURE

Lightroom Classic has been leveraging AI through Adobe Firefly,, a machine-learning framework, for features like lens blur, denoise, and object-aware masking.

Photographers will no longer have to jump to Photoshop for content-aware fill and object removal - which means faster and more intuitive editing at the click of a button!

The tool automatically identifies and remove unwanted elements from photos.

If you haven't tried the content-aware fill tool yet, here's what you should know.

ABOUT THE FEATURE

  • Advanced Object Removal: The AI removal tool is designed to intelligently detect and remove unwanted objects from your photos. This could include distractions like traffic cones (see examples below), photo-bombers or other objects that disrupt the composition of the photo.

Content-Aware Fill Technology: Similar to Photoshop's Content-Aware Fill, this feature uses advanced algorithms to fill in the areas where the object was removed seamlessly. Adobe Sensei analyzes the surrounding pixels and textures to create a natural-looking fill. You won't have to jump to Photoshop for this tool any longer!

  • Ease of Use: The tool is integrated into Lightroom Classic's existing editing workflow, making it accessible to photographers without needing to switch to another software like Photoshop for detailed retouching. It is also very similar to some of the healing tools, just with a little more pizzaz.

  • Control and Customization: You still have control over the process, such as selecting areas for removal or adjusting the fill settings to better match the surrounding content.

  • Accuracy and Performance: Adobe continually updates these AI features to improve accuracy and performance based on user feedback and advancements in machine learning technology.

HOW TO USE THE REMOVAL TOOL

"How to use Generative Remove on a desktop:

  • You can find Generative Remove under the newly renamed Remove panel (aka “Heal”).

  • Make sure the “generative AI” checkbox is enabled before you start brushing (note: when unchecked, Lightroom will use Content-Aware Remove to fill your brushed spots).

  • By default, you will be given a moment to refine your selection with an add or subtract brush. Remember to include shadows for a more accurate result! You can also skip this step by holding down ‘CTRL’ on windows or ‘CMD’ on mac as you finish your brush stroke.

  • Once you’re ready to apply and have accepted the terms, Generative Remove will use Firefly AI to remove your distractions and intelligently fill in the space that’s left by the removed objects.

  • Note: stable internet connection is required to use this feature.

  • Generative Remove also lets you choose from multiple variations, so you can pick the one you like best, giving you full creative control. "

IS IT TIME TO DITCH PHOTOSHOP?

Ehh, not yet. But, for all of my basic removal needs (most of the photos I take for surf and portraits), I will not be using Photoshop as frequently anymore.

Photoshop is definitely best for high-fashion, beauty, and product shots that require more finessing for the little details.

Since software features can evolve with updates, it's a good to update to the newest versions, as there may be bug fixes and improvements that may be released with newer versions. Make sure to update to LC v13.2 for the newest AI removal tool! I'm so glad Adobe released this new feature so that I can be more efficient in the editing process, and I will definitely be using this regularly.
